Mainstreaming National Youth Service Programme Commences
Recent changes in the Zimbabwean socio economic and political environment has prompted the Ministry to critically evaluate and review the National Youth Service Programme to come with new strategies and operational framework. This was revealed by the Ministry's Secretary, Mr. P. Mupazviriho at a two day workshop with the theme " Torwards mainstreaming National Youth Service Programme in Zimbabwe" held at a local hotel from 01- 02 August 2007. Participants were drawn from various government departments, diplomatic community, registered youth groups and students from tertiary institutions of learning.
Presentations by former Permanent Secretaries in the Ministry, Dr. TK. Tsodzo and Mr. DC. Munyoro focused on the initial perspective, vision, thrust, challenges and way forward of the programme. Academics like Dr. Chivaura and Dr. Mahere presented on mainstreaming of the citizenship training into the education system and curriculum. Representatives of youth groups and graduates of the programme presented on the Youth Perspective on National Youth Service.
Intense plenary debate and presentations on what should be the vision, mission, core values, objectives, curriculum, sources of funding and strategies followed. Once adopted, recommendations made during the workshop are going to form the core of what direction the NYS programme will follow come 2008.
In his closing remarks,D eputy Minister of Youth Development and Employment Creation CDE Saviour Kasukuwere said government was ready to work with youths that have new ideas for the country to realise its full economic potential. "Our aim is to see that every youth in Zimbabwe has an equal opportunity and equal access to socio-economic and political empowerment', he said.
